Founder’s Day

National PTA’s Founder’s Day is February 17. It was established by the National PTA in 1910 is a celebration of the legacy and work of our founders – Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, and Selena Sloan Butler – to better the lives of every child. It is a time to reflect upon and take pride in the many accomplishments of PTA and a time to renew our commitment to be a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for parents, and a strong advocate for public education.

Our founders were individuals of courage and imagination. Their idea – to improve the lives and future of all children – relied on the power of individual action, worked beyond barriers, and changed the world for all children.

A Founder’s Day celebration is a great time to acknowledge the founders of your local PTA unit and to recount your milestones! A Founder’s Day celebration is also a good time to promote the importance of PTA your community.
